Sensible Sun Tanning

Moderate sun tanning (up to 20 minutes per day) over a number of days produces better results. As pigment (melanin) builds in the skin it adds to your skin protection. It takes skin 2 to 5 days to produce the pigment that provides some protection against burning. In contrast, burning can occur in a few hours in the sun.
Development of a tan takes several days and cannot be rushed.

Skin typing

Dr Fitzpatrick's typing is based on skin colour, complexion and reaction to sun exposure.

Skin Type / Description Comment
Type I (very white, freckled) Always burns, lacks melanin and must not tan
Type II (white) Usually burns with overexposure, but able to make pigment slowly
Type III (white to olive) Sometimes burns with overexposure, but makes pigment readily
Type IV (brown) Rarely burns with plenty of pigment, needs longer exposure for Vitamin D
Type V (dark brown) Very rarely burns and requires longer exposure to get Vitamin D
Type VI (black) Never burns and requires longer exposure to get Vitamin D.

Type I should avoid sun.

Type II, III and IV require a program for tanning purposes. Go to our website to find out appropriate program for your skin type in a Solarium.
